Why not be the person with the pool that all your friends and family go to hang out with? What if I told you that you have options when you decide to build a pool. In this article, I will explain the pros as well as the cons with each different type of pool. I know what you are thinking, it might be a little intimidating to build a pool. I am here to tell you that although it is a bit intimidating, it’s all worth it. That feeling that you will have when your pool is complete will be one of the best feelings in the world, I promise! 

1. Above ground pool: This type of pool is the most affordable and easiest to install. You can install this type of pool even though your backyard might be small. This pool is meant for families on a budget who want to still keep cool and have fun in the hot summer months. With some of the pools, you can take it with you if you ever decide to move out. Another pro would be that your kids would be outside in the summer than inside. I always tell homeowners who are thinking of building a pool that swimming is an amazing exercise that drains out energy and also having a pool will keep a bored kid occupied. We wouldn’t want to see our kids just stare at a screen all day inside, what ever happened to making childhood memories? What ever happened to going outside in the summer and just having friends over all day? Wouldn’t you want to give that opportunity to the new generation? So, you are probably wondering, “how much would this cost?” The cost ranges between $3,000 to $10,000 depending on where you buy the pool. 2. In ground pools: These types of pools are the more traditional pool styles you probably came across as a kid. Now, construction can be around a few weeks to a month depending on the type of pool. Remember that this is a permanent pool, and you will require permits to build a pool. The types of pools have several varieties, such as concrete and fiberglass. One of the pros when you are building these types of pools is that you can make any design you see fit for your backyard. You can choose the types of materials for the pool such as tile, stone, concrete, pavers, stone veneer, and much more. The options to customize your pool are also high. I have seen homeowners build a pool bar in the middle with a lazy river going around the pool bar. I also seen homeowners include a grotto with a beautiful waterfall design for the pool. You can make a pool look traditional, modern, or you can take a much more natural look. These types of pools are bigger than the above ground pools and you can enjoy swimming with the whole family there. While you are building your pool, might as well remodel your whole backyard. Believe me, you will remodel your whole backyard because it makes sense. At the end of the day, you are investing in your property by adding a pool, so why not remodel everything else to compliment the pool? Where there are pros, there are also cons. The cost to build an in-ground pool varies but it’s much, much higher than an above ground pool. The typical cost would be around $40,000 to $100,000 depending on the size, design, and materials for the pool. Remember, this is an investment! Another thing you might want to consider is the time frame to build a pool. You will need to get plans and a design for the pool and then submit it to your city which can take around a few weeks or months to get those plans approved. The longest I have seen someone wait for permits was six months! After the plans are approved, you will need to start construction. I would recommend doing your research and talking to many companies. Remember, a company can have many projects under its belt, but I have seen many reputable companies take their time to build these pools or even start it because they were so busy. The time frame depends on the company you hired but there are so many factors to take into consideration with the time frame. These factors include, weather, labor, plumbing, electricity, inspection, demolition, cleaning, remodeling your entire backyard, and much more. The average time frame is between two months or three months. The longest I have seen was six months’ worth of work, due to the complexity of the pool and accessories. The cost to maintain a pool is also another consideration when you are thinking of building a pool. Cleaning a pool and maintaining it is time consuming, so finding a reputable pool cleaner is a must. In the end, the best part of building an inground pool are the accessories. 3. Infinity Pools: One of my favorite designs ever, are the infinity pools! They will make any backyard look much more modern. Infinity pools have no hard edges like a traditional pool, and the water appears to go nowhere. It looked endless, hence the name infinity pool. Infinity pools are becoming very popular due to widespread media. These pools will definitely have your friends and family in awe and will give you the nickname, “the goat.” Don’t quote me on that, but I definitely think that this pool can make your backyard much more appealing. These pools are very beautiful but there is a cost to it. Depending on the size of the infinity pool, the average cost is anywhere from $60,000 to $150,000. 4. Spas and Hot tubs: So we have been talking about pools and pools, and more pools in this article. Let’s talk about hot tubs and spas! While most people think of, in ground jacuzzis, there are above ground spas and hot tubs you can buy. The cost is much smaller than any pool, ranging between $2,000 to $5,000. So you might be thinking, where am I going to put a jacuzzi? You can install your jacuzzi in your backyard but let’s say you don’t have any concrete, just girt or grass. You will need a flat surface to install your jacuzzi such as a wooden deck or concrete. If you don’t have concrete or a wooden deck to install the hot tub, I would recommend hiring a professional to install concrete for you. So you have a small concrete pad for your hot tub, what’s next? Maybe you want to install it the next day? No, after pouring the new concrete for your hot tub, I suggest you wait twenty eight days for the concrete to cure before you install a hot tub. Why? Well let’s say you have someone come and build you a concrete pad, the next day your hot tub comes in. You install it and add water. Then you wake up the next day only to find the concrete pad cracked. The reason it cracked is because you installed the hot tub too soon on the freshly poured concrete and the concrete wasn’t strong enough for the weight of the hot tub. I have seen homeowners immediately add something heavy to new concrete like a hot tub and it all cracked. Let’s not make that mistake! 

So, to end this article, there are plenty of choices when it comes to building your own dream pool in your backyard. I would definitely recommend researching different pool styles and materials before the construction takes place.
